Competing with Heart

Last month I had the opportunity to photograph Jeremy Woodward, a New Hampshire triathlete who’s story is one of true inspiration.

Jeremy had found out in 2000 that he had an infection in his heart prompting a replacement of his aortic valve. Seven years later the valved had failed and Jeremy went into congestive heart failure leading to a second open heart surgery. While awaiting the surgery Jeremy’s made a promise to his friend and trainer that if he made it through the surgery he would train so that someday he could compete in an Ironman Triathlon.

In July 2010 Jeremy made good on his promise by completing the 2010 IRONMAN Lake Placid competition. Not only did he compete but he also raised over $200,000 for the Nature conservancy. But he isn’t stopping there, Jeremy is also slated to compete in the 2012 Ford IRONMAN Lake Placid the 2012 Ford IRONMAN Arizona.

Jeremy lives life to the fittest. He is a personal trainer and owns Jeremy’s Boot Camp. For those in the New England area he has organized the IRONHEART Classic 5K New Hampshire. The event will be held on Saturday, May 5th beginning at Rollins Park in Concord, New Hampshire. To register check out the ironheart race website.

A big thanks to Jeremy for a great session but even more importantly for sharing his story and being a true inspiration proving that hard work and determination does pay off!
